Wedding Frenzy

Weddings are scary. Even when they are not mine. Two of my best friends are getting married in Dec and I have already been allocated duties to cover during the big day. Let us not worry about the preparation because it is their problem and not mine. I want to talk about my problems. Technically there shouldn't be any because I am not the one facing the possibility of being left at the altar. So I am safe. Not.

I remembered when I was young, attending a chinese wedding was a glamorous event. My Mother would bring out all her accessories and hung them on herself, simulating a christmas tree. And not to mention the new clothes that she bought specially for a distant-cousin's cousin's neighbour's daughter's wedding and her two and the half hour worth of bee hive hairdo. I don't blame her, because this is the time that all aunties would show off their possessions. The more decorated the necks and ears, the higher the beehives, the better. The winner would get to be the most talked about and envied women of the night. The losers would go home later to whine at their husbands. Little children like myself would make use of the opportunity to down 10 glasses of coke.

I don't know when did weddings suddenly become boring. Guests are no longer excited about the bride or the groom, ie if they do notice him at all. They are most concerned about when is the person sitting next to them getting married, so that they can kindly arrange their yearly overseas vacation to fall on the auspicious day. Either that or they will spend half the time evaluating if the designer bag that Ms Glamourous is carrying is real or not.

MC:Let's us welcome the newly wed couples!

Guest 1: Yee, the shark's fin so little. Trying very pick out the fins from his bowl.

Guest 2: Yah lor, only 2 strands. Gulped them down in a mouthful.

Guest 3: Hey, that's a fake LV! Pointing to the bag 15 tables away.

Guest 4: Aiyo, are you married? When is your turn? Turn to smack her boy for drinking his 10th glass of coke.

Me: Won't be anytime soon unless they legalise gay marriages. Whole table froze.

I love doing that just to watch their reactions.

The circus is coming to the wedding.

Over here I think people have lost their enthusiasm for marriage because none of them last anymore. Personally I think thats a good thing, it means people are more likely to remarry so time for another party.

Simple American,
Hee, tell me more about wedding jokes so that I can use them at the up coming weddings!

Kunstemæcker,
We, chinese, measure our wealth and er happiness by the strands of shark's fins served at the wedding dinner. NO shark's fin soup? No happiness.

Jade,
I love parties too. Pre-wedding hen's parties, wedding parties, post-wedding parties, pre-breakup parties and post-breakup parties.....
